Major political parties in Pakistan unveil party manifestos ahead of general elections

ISLAMABAD, July 10 (Xinhua) -- Three major political parties in Pakistan, namely the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), have all unveiled their party manifestos ahead of the general elections slated on July 25.

The PTI is the last among the top three that has launched its manifesto Monday with a title "Road to New Pakistan".

Chief of the party, Imran Khan, a cricketer-turned-politician, addressed his audience here terming the manifesto as no easy-solution of problems the country faces.

Khan said that "an easy solution to the problems that Pakistan is faced with does not exist. No one should assume that we will be able to easily implement this manifesto."

As part of the manifesto, he stated that the party is planning to create 10 million jobs in the country, one of the major issues Pakistan is currently facing, and will also introduce low-cost housing schemes for the poor people.

"The first challenge is unemployment and how to create jobs. Our challenge is to create 10 million jobs and 5 million homes in our five-year term," the party leader said.

Before PTI, the PML-N, who has ruled the country for five years after winning the general election in 2013, had presented its party manifesto on Thursday last week. The manifesto was headlined with the slogan "Vote ko izzat do-khidmat ko vote do", which means "honor the vote, vote for performance" in English.

PML-N President and former Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, while launching the manifesto, said that the party would focus on education, health and employment for the youth if they come to power after 2018 general elections.

He also promised to introduce interest-free loan programs to eliminate poverty by 2030.

On the occasion, Ahsan Iqbal, a prominent PML-N leader and former interior minister, said that "the PML-N manifesto is a roadmap to include Pakistan among the top 25 world economies," adding that the policy statement anticipates the introduction of an agricultural industrial revolution in Pakistan.

Earlier on June 28, the Pakistan People's Party became the first political party to make public its manifesto, with a plan to improve the country's economy, provision of basic facilities and employment to general public.

In its manifesto, the party has pledged to rebuild an economy that works for all the people, to strengthen the basis of democracy by ensuring harmony in the relationship between the public and the state, to free all Pakistani people from the fear of hunger, thirst and helplessness and to reclaim Pakistan's rightful place in the world.

Political parties in Pakistan normally express their intentions, views and vision about national issues by launching party manifestos ahead of elections.

Local political experts believe that a manifesto is a pledge that a political party makes before elections. It can act as a gauge to determine their performance later on.

Pakistan's general elections are scheduled on July 25 and strict security measures will be taken for free, fair and transparent conduct of the elections.

According to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), some 350,000 military personnel will be deployed inside and outside polling stations during the balloting day to maintain law and order.
