MADRID, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- A supporter of Barcelona-based football club RCDE Espanyol was given a one-year prison sentence on Wednesday for directing racist insults at Athletic Bilbao forward Inaki Williams.
The Barcelona provincial court also sentenced the man to pay a fine of six euros a day for six months, while forbidding him from entertain a football ground for two years after the completion of the prison sentence, while he has also been prohibited from working in jobs related to education or sport for four years.
The incident related to a match between Espanyol and Athletic Bilbao from January 25, 2020, when the supporter was detained for making "public and notorious" gestures and noises imitating a monkey to Williams, "with the evident contempt for the player's black skin."
La Liga took the case to court as part of its ongoing campaign against racism in sport and celebrated the result of the trial saying the penalty "constitutes a new step in the fight against racism in football, continuing the firm and coherent action of La Liga in favor of the values of respect and inclusion."
La Liga added it would "continue working with determination to eradicate any form of violence or discrimination in sport." ■
