VIENTIANE, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- The annual That Luang festival has begun in the Lao capital Vientiane, ushering in five days of vibrant celebration, spiritual devotion, and bustling commerce that not only reflect the rich traditions of Laos but also boost tourism and trade opportunities.

The festival, taking place from Nov. 1 to 5, is one of the most significant national cultural events of the year, blending culture, commerce, and community spirit in a joyful celebration. Besides preserving tradition, many people see the festival as a golden opportunity for trade, as it boosts festive spending and provides a prime moment for new businesses to reach the large crowds that visit the festival each day.

Phoum, a 25-year-old resident of Vientiane, told Xinhua on Tuesday that the That Luang festival provides a platform for people to turn their ideas into businesses, reaching large crowds in a short period of time. Inspired by friends who earned well selling food last year, he and his friends opened a small stall selling drinks and snacks, hoping to gain extra income during the festival.

"Last year, I watched my friends run food stalls during the festival, and I was amazed at how much they earned in just a few days. It made me realize that even a small business, in a big crowd like this, can grow quickly and reach many people," Phoum said.

Beyond immediate earnings, he sees the festival as a chance to test his business ideas and potentially develop a sustainable side venture. "Even though it's just a small stall, I see it as a chance to learn how to run a business and maybe continue selling these products after the festival," he added.

For Phoum, the festival is not only a source of income but also a learning ground and a source of inspiration.

With its festive and lively atmosphere, the festival provides a vibrant space for locals to come together, enjoy a variety of activities, and create lasting memories.

Palinya, a resident of Vientiane, brought her cousins to the festival to explore the stalls, enjoy food, and play traditional games, reminiscing about her own childhood visits. "Even though the festival was smaller back then, I still remember running around, buying little toys, sharing food, and laughing with my siblings," she added.

Despite the festival growing larger over the years, Palinya said its spirit of community, joy, and shared memories remains just as strong.

Speaking at the festival's grand opening on Nov. 1, Lao Deputy Prime Minister Kikeo Khaykhamphithoune emphasized that the event not only preserves and promotes Laos' rich traditions and culture but also boosts trade, tourism, and international cooperation. He expressed confidence that this year's festival would attract growing numbers of both domestic and foreign visitors to the festival grounds and major tourist sites across Vientiane.

Somchit, a local vendor, believes the festival is a major attraction for both domestic and international tourism. "People from all over Laos come to the capital Vientiane to experience this festival because it's such an important and significant event for the country," she said.

She added that international visitors also benefit from the festival's rich cultural offerings. "For tourists, it's a unique opportunity to experience authentic Lao traditions, from religious ceremonies to local food, performances, and crafts."

During the festival, an exhibition featured 40 photos illustrating the history of the That Luang Stupa, accompanied by ancient Lao artifacts. The display gave visitors the opportunity to learn about the stupa's historical and cultural significance as a treasured national heritage site. ■
