SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, July 11 (Xinhua) -- A 12-year-old boy was killed and four other children were wounded Wednesday after an explosive device accidentally went off in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.
The blast took place at village Memendar of Shopian district, about 54 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.
"Today in an accidental blast a boy was killed and four others accompanying him were wounded at Memendar village here," a police official posted in Shopian told Xinhua. "It appears that the children were fiddling with some explosive device that went off accidentally."
"The boys were brought to local hospital Shopian for treatment, where one of them later succumbed to his wounds and four others were rushed to Srinagar hospital for specialized treatment," a health official at district hospital Shopian said.
Police teams rushed to the spot to ascertain the reason of blast.
During the past more than two decades of ongoing armed insurgency in Indian-controlled Kashmir, many people were killed or left crippled after accidentally fiddling with the explosives or stepping upon the land mines planted in the region.
A guerilla war is also going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in the region since 1989. The gunfight between militants and Indian troopers in Indian-controlled Kashmir takes place intermittently.
